چکیده

This paper describes an adaptive learning environment with an open learner model to promote learner reflection. The learner model can be presented using different techniques: textual and haptic. The paper investigates the potential for haptic learner models in terms of whether users can understand a haptic model, and whether they find it useful. Most liked both versions, but of those with a preference, more found the haptic method of interaction useful. However, some liked the textual version, suggesting the need for a variety of methods of accessing the model to be available in learning environments with an open learner model.

Some Unusual Open Learner Models

Open learner models to facilitate reflection are becoming more common in adaptive learning environments. There are a variety of approaches to presenting the learner model to the student, and for the student to interact with their open learner model, as the requirements for an open learner model will vary depending on the aims of the system. In this paper we extend existing approaches yet furthe...

Interfaces for Inspectable Learner Models

Inspectable (open) learner models have been in use for some time now. This poster presents views of the learner model that have become more common, such as skill meters and concept maps; and introduces developments in novel interfaces for open learner models including the use of animation, audio and haptic feedback, and user-constructed learner model views.

Soft Tissue Modeling Using ANFIS for Training Diagnosis of Breast Cancer in Haptic Simulator

Soft tissue modeling for the creation of a haptic simulator for training medical skills has been the focus of many attempts up to now. In soft tissue modeling the most important parameter considered is its being real-time, as well as its accuracy and sensitivity. In this paper, ANFIS approach is used to present a nonlinear model for soft tissue. The required data for training the neuro-fuzzy mo...

An evaluation of the learner model in WISDeM

This case study discusses the initial evaluation of the Learner Model in WISDeM [Web Interactive Student Distance-education Model – see Figure 1]. WISDeM was built on top of the ProFlexLearn system that supports interactive e-learning (Ghaoui and Janvier, 2004). Catania (1992) reports that sensory input is mainly derived from iconic 60%, auditory 30%, and haptic 10% with little from olfactory a...

Providing implicit formative feedback to learners by combining self-generated and instructional explanations

Formative feedback for a learner typically uses human or artificial intelligence to draw an inference about a learner’s knowledge state from the learner’s actions, and select a learner-directed response. To tackle cases when such intelligence is not easily available, we are exploring ways of providing implicit formative feedback: A learner’s action is to respond to an explanation prompt, and th...
